Fourteen years ago, when we moved to New Jersey, one of the first things I did was join the YMCA. I was looking to get in shape after having my first baby and I was also looking for the sense of community that the Y offers. Fast forward to today-- both of my kids learned to swim, played sports and took classes there and now I teach classes there as well. In that first year, I also signed up to do something I had never done before-- run a 5K. I remember not knowing how to train, what to eat, what to wear, and feeling very lost. (How far is a 5K???) But, as with almost all the programs in the Y, there was someone to guide me and help me figure it out. Now I'm in the position to help others so I volunteer to help with this event. It is very close to my heart because it honors Janice Garbolino who was the Health and Wellness director when I first joined the YMCA. She has since lost her battle with breast cancer and this event supports the LIVESTRONG foundation in her name. It's also one of the prettiest 5K courses in Central New Jersey! Whether you're a new runner or a first-timer, you'll love the community feeling at this event.
