The town I live in is a small, safe town which makes it especially shocking when crime happens. In February, someone broke into a house and stole all of a family's jewelry.  No one was home at the time and, although it was tragic for them, obviously it could have been much worse.  The police even caught the burglar but none of the jewelry was recovered.  I was contacted by a friend of the woman who told me that a group of them wanted to do something nice for her. They initially thought about buying jewelry to replace some of what was stolen but eventually decided to commission me to make "something" for her-- whatever she wanted.  It took some time for us to get together but when we did, she told me more than anything, she wanted something to symbolize her family and she wanted to hang it right on the door that had been broken into.  We came up with a sketch of the four family members, plus their dog, and kept it in a simple style that fit with other folksy art they have.  She wanted certain identifying features for each of them-- her curly hair, her son's earbuds, her daughter's long hair, her husband's glasses, and her dog's fluffy ears.  When I installed it yesterday, she was thrilled to see all those details that makes the piece unique to them.  Her friends did a really lovely thing for her and helped her reclaim her home with depictions of the people that matter the most-- her family.
